Insulation

Best insulation to complete a partially insulated loft (with some awkward areas) - pictures included

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi. I'm looking to complete the insulation in the loft of the house I've just bought. One of the previous owners has done what I would describe as a "partial" loft conversion. The loft is split, with around half of it boarded with plastered walls, etc. There seems to be insulation under the floor, and behind the walls from what I can tell. The other half is separated by a wall/door (not draught proofed). However, this area is only partially boarded. There does appear to be insulation under the boarded areas. There's a good sized area in the corner isn't insulated. Also, where they have made walls in the main area - the insulation stops there. Meaning there's another gap without insulation on around the edge - this area is also very small/awkward, so I don't think I could fully get to it. You can see some pictures here - https://photos.app.goo.gl/4xyLytMJzpvMMFzz5 The mess/rubble in the pictures seems to be what was left behind when the roof was replaced a few years back. What kind of insulation would be best to complete what's been done already - that is if that's the best approach? I'm mainly concerned about the edge area (behind the walls) which will be hard to reach. Thanks in advance.

Kingspan is your obvious choice because it's easy to cut and install. Blanket insulation is also an option.

I would use Kingspan insulation. This is used in cavity wall's and on loft conversions. U can cut it to any shape or size you like with a normal hand saw.

If not being further converted, remove debris and put a sufficient amount of loft quilt down on the floor areas and a draft seal to the door frame. If the conversion has been done properly that should be sufficient.

Kingsman is an excellent choice and employing a 25mm vapour barrier with celotex/ kingspan to cover both stud work & insulated voids will ensure optimum U-value and stop mould caused by cold bridging.
