Through lounge wooden floor needs levelling

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.48 PM

Hello I have a 3-bed semi-detached house with a through lounge. The through lounge was made, from 2 separate rooms, around 8 years ago. The issue that I have is that the wooden floor (made up of original floorboards), is at a different height slightly in the front room area to the backroom area. This is most noticeably seen in the middle of the room where the dividing wall was, and the front room floorboards are slightly higher than the backroom floorboards. I want to get this rectified and have the whole of the floor totally level so that I can put down a new carpet. The length of the room is 8 metres and the width is 3.3 metres. I am looking for some advice please to get this fixed? Thanks.

Hello, You would need to get the existing wooden floor removed in order to level the joists underneath and then place back the original floorboards.

Hi there, As LEONART said, all floorboard would need lifting and then decide on a new floor level (probably the same height as any adjoining rooms). Floor joists would then either be adjusted or new joists would be strapped to the side of existing joist at the new floor level. Kind regards

If you are looking at fitting a carpet in through the two areas I would say to fit 8 x 4 sheets of 6mm or 9mm ply throughout making sure you use whole sheets through the middle of the room, sometime if one side is lower it is necessary to ply the lower side first then ply over the whole area, this would be minimum fuss and get you a great floor to fit a carpet too
