Central heating pump running
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM
We have just moved into a bungalow that we are going to renovate and replace the central heating system. The old boiler has had a service but the pump, in the attic, runs continuously, even when the timer has turned off everything at night. I want to know if it’s safe for it to continue like this. We could turn it off via the electric switch at night. Or do we need to have it sorted by a heating engineer?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dear Dave,
Your Heating System pump should run only when:
1. There is a demand for Hot Water.
2. There is a demand for Central Heating.
If your heating system pump is running despite Hot Water and Heating being off, then negative effects are these:
1. It makes a noise. Sometimes people even can't sleep because of the excessive noise.
2. Your Heating System pump would worn out faster, because it's working 247.
3. Your electricity bill is higher than could be, because your Heating System pump is running continuously.
What's causing Heating System pump to run Continuously? Most common reasons are:
1. Heating system wiring mistake.
2. Boiler's main circuit board is faulty.
3. Heating system Motorized/Diverter valve is stuck.
Do you need to fix it?
Answer is yes If you want to extend longevity of your Heating System pump, have lower electricity bill, reduce noise in your home.
Regards,
Rokas

If the pump is running constantly
It’s probably something to do with the motorised valve not switching off leave a live feed to the pump
Best to get a heating engineer to look at it

Have it sorted by a heating engineer. It need to work with the controls when there is a demand for heating or hot water. It’s a waste of energy for it to run constant which in turn reduces your pumps life span.

You need it sorting out eventually if a pumps running and you turn off your system, valves close pump will bur. Out. Loft +insulation +fire =expensive/life.

Although not dangerous, there is an underlying issue that will be causing the pump to run continually, I would recommend having a heating engineer investigate for you.

If the boilers fuse rating and wiring is up to current standards it will/should be safe to run. with out seeing it, it would be difficult to diagnose the issue. from what you have described I would hedge my bets on ot being an issue with a motorised valve being stuck. is the hot water always hot? does the boiler ever fire when your controls are not calling for Heating and hot water?
If you're concerned for safety then I'd definitely recommend getting a qualified Heating engineer to look at the issue and rectify it if possible as peace of mind is definitely worth it also being a new system to you it may have safety issues or defects that have been missed previously.
Good luck and hope this helps
Many thanks

Hello there, This definitely needs investigating by an engineer, it could be something simple like a stuck motorised valve or it may even have a wiring fault. It’s definitely not good for the pump or your electricity bill to have it running constantly though.
