How to get rid of an airlock

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hello - got a noisy airlock when I start running either of the upstairs baths. Tried turning water off, draining taps, then turning on again and bled rads. Unfortunately still got the noise though. One tap is mixer but the other isn't so do I need to try that thing I read about of using something to try to send water back up a pipe. Or will it just disappear eventually? Thanks experts! (my original mention of waterhammer was some jargon picked up off the net. Reckon I just mean a noise caused by an airlock)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

air lock or water hammer ?,forcing the main back up a pipe may well cure an airlock but not water hammer, first you need to find the source, loose jumpers in taps, unclipped pipework, ball valve judder in tanks and wc,clip pipes, change taps, fit equilibrium ball valves in tanks and wc,or fit a water hammer arrester.i have been a plumber for 40 years i have never heard an airlock causing a noise.

Could be the pipe work is not secured properly i/e clipped, when turning the water off the force of the water is causing water hammer

Without looking or hearing it, it will probably be a ball valve in the cylinder, air locks don't make noise they will however slow the water pressure in the hot tap.

Water hammer, failed pipe clippings or joists should be investigated

Definitely water hammer, trace the noise back. Most common issues are with isolation valves and toilet filler valves. Once found just fit new valve. 👍
