Potterton Performa 24 Eco He boiler using hot water makes flame fail

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi, my boiler has been suffering repeated flame failures but because it's in the cellar it's taken me a while to realise that it only fails when I use the hot water. But the heating works fine if I don't use hot water.... It's usually a good little boiler and it's not that old plus it's been serviced regularly. Is this likely to be serious? I really can't afford a new boiler. I did notice the last few times I used the shower that the water wouldn't get very hot with the heating on. But turning off the heating made the water nice and hot. Is this going to be some eye watering major problem? Should I stop using the hot water until someone looks at it? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks. So today, I discovered that if I turn the heating off the water heats up and no flame failure. Then I turn the heating back on. So not able to use both at the same time. But both work separately... Thanks for the suggestion John Jackson.

The problem could be a blocked plate heat exchanger

Could be anything from hot water sensor to divertor valve or plate heat exchanger. When system has cooled down check to see if the far left pipe gets warm when running the hot and check when your running hot water it's only calling for water on display not water and heating could indicate fault with divertor valve. Failing that I call a gas safe engineer to look over it. Hope that helps

It could also be the diverter valve in the boiler faulty this is usually the problem with heating working and little or no hot water

A combi boiler doesn't allow you to use both. Hot water would get priority. Turning heating off wouldn't make a difference. Potentially diverter valve letting by. Blocked plate heat exchanger would cause water to be going hot and cold constantly.
