I've just found out a cooker hood can be installed using a convenient socket....Thanks for the advice here. Now all I need to know is who makes them, and where can I buy it? Any help most gratefully received

Hi Rosie,
You can purchase socket outlets from any electrical wholesaler, screwfix, B&Q etc. MK is a good quality robust manufacturer who’s prices are great.
Cooker hoods come in all different sizes, colours, prices & designs. Your best bet is to google one that suits your needs.
Regarding the wiring, personally I would install a fused spur and depending on the power outage of the cooker hood I would down rate the fuse to a suitable rating rather then using a socket.
A qualified electrician will be able to install a fused spur & cooker hood for you.
Wish you all the best with your hunt,
VDN electrics.

All the major manufacturers will make single ovens and hobs with have a conventional socket, it’s all down to the maximum load of the appliance so if it’s 13A or less then it will have a plug socket.

To comply with electrical regs there needs to be an isolation switch above the worktop so that in case of a fire it can be switched off without leaning over the hob. As for a plug we always cut them off and hardwired them in but most hoods come with a wire that you could fit a plug to if you wanted, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's far easier to fit a flex outlet, hardwired it in and then fit an FCU above worktop. Easier to change fuse safer complies to regs

Cooker hood can be found at any decent electrical store such as currys and hughes or many places online. They come in a variety of sizes and colours. Some are recirculating meaning they do NOT extractor the air through a duct to outside but use a carbon filter to filter out unwated smells. Then there is conventional hoods which extract through a duct and is cored through a wall to the outside. Always check the size as they come in 600mm 750mm 900mm 1000m 1100mm and 1200mm to suit a range of stoves.

Don't forget to check that you have enough height above the cooker which is usually around 750mm to the bottom of the extract.
