Ensuite toilet mysteriously fills with smelly wastewater

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

UPDATED ON 2 JUNE 2020 ** We have plunged the toilet (by me and someone who came around to look at the issue) and it has made no difference. If this is an internal plumbing issue, how do I go about sorting it?? Any pointers would be gratefully received** My son has an ensuite bathroom and the toilet appears to fill up with foul smelling deep yellow waste water which at times seems to look as though it has an oily film on the top. In the past, we just thought that our son had forgotten to flush the toilet but now it is clear there is something dodgy going on with the plumbing. The water in the cistern is clean and so it seems the waste water is being pushed back into the toilet. Also, when the wastewater makes an appearance (say overnight) I have noticed that the toilet seat appears speckled with water droplets but this morning, it was noticeably a lot wetter and the floor around the toilet was also wet (with splashes of water, rather than looking like a leak from the base). Should we just get the toilet replaced? Any pointers would be gratefully received! ---- thanks for the 2 answers below. To clarify though, the dirty water doesn't immediately flow back. Once you flush, the toilet is clean but then very slowly, it gets dirty again. It seems gradual but then those splash marks on the seat and around the toilet would seem to indicate that the water comes through with force?!!? ----- GM plumbing. Many thanks for your helpfully detailed response. What's your advice on how I resolve it? Would plunging it be sufficient? Thanks again!

Hi, it sounds like something has been dropped down your toilet and is stuck in the waste pipe so waste cannot flow properly into drain when flushed and therefore backs up and comes back into your toilet, first of all I would try useing a plunger to see if you can move blockage

Sounds like a blockage in the drain or waste stack , when u flush it's taking the waste away up to the blockage point but then it stays there draining away very very slowly....the splashes will be air rising from the unblocked side of the drain rising through the waste until the level drops below the height of the u bend ,....hence when u get up in the morning its discolured.....then when u flush again the cycle repeats. Long winded sorry but hope u kind of understand what I mean

is this wc back to back with another wc ?,you may have a blockage, get a qualified plumber to look at it.you may have a partial blockage in soil stack or drain causing back pressure pushing foul water and gasses back into pan.

I recommend you check the inspection chamber also. This is normally located outside of the property, e.g in garden, or front of house.
