If I want vinyl floor laid over good condition floorboards do I need the floor ply-boarded?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

I am considering having Vinyl flooring (on a roll) laid in my living room, I currently have good condition floorboards (over suspended floor) and I previously had the room carpeted but now thinking of a different type of flooring. Is it necessary to have ply-boarding laid over the floor boards or not? and if its personal choice which is the prefered method and why?

Hi there as a floor layer i have never laided vinyl directly onto floor boards. You would always uses a ply base, with the thickness depending on how bad the floor that is already down is. Once the ply is down you would then use a product call feather finish to fill in any nail holes and joins between board so that the floor is completely flat as any unevenness will show in the finish vinyl floor. hope that helps Jason@jrfloors

Hi I would recommend a 4mm to 6mm plywood be installed before you lay any vinyl product on floorboards as Vinyl will gradually take the shape of the floorboards
