Advice on best approach to complete insulation in loft with some awkward to reach areas

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi. We've just bought and moved in to a new house - it's a terraced house, built in around 1900. One of the previous owners has done what I would describe as a "partial" loft conversion. The loft is split, with around 2/3 of it boarded with plastered walls, etc. There seems to be insulation under the floor, and behind the walls. The other 1/3 is separated by a wall/door. This area is only partially boarded. There does appear to be insulation under the boarded areas, but not all of it is boarded - a large area in the corner isn't. Also, where they have made walls in the main area - the insulation stops there. Meaning there's another gap without insulation. This area is also very small/awkward, so I don't think I could fully get to it. You can see some pictures here - https://photos.app.goo.gl/4xyLytMJzpvMMFzz5 The mess/rubble seems to be what was left behind when the roof was replaced a few years back. What would be the best approach here - what are my options? Thanks in advance.

You could get a long pole or stick something that will reach the area and push it in the holes be careful you don’t damage the ceiling why doing this and your problem should be solved.

The loft floor area could be overlaid with additional insulation, topping up to 270mm (utilising what May already be there, I.e. if already 100mm, overlay with 170mm quilt insulation. The vertical drops ( the loft side of attic room(s) ) looks like there is existing insulation underneath the black lining? If so, just duplicate to uninsulated vertical drops in same / similar way. As this looks like a dusty job, either mask 😷 & coverup well or better still... call in an installer 😅

Use a peice of flooring and lay on ceiling joists lay out your insolation and move the to second peice until you've reached the end. Hope this helps.
