Removing a sink glued to tiled wall (no retaining bolts) to fix a leak

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

I am looking for some guidance as I have a pedestal sink which has a leaking waste pipe. The sink is not fitted with retaining bolts, it seems to have been fixed to the wall with adhesive and the pedestal taking the weight. I am unable to remove the pedestal as it sits within a recess in underside of the the base of the sink. I am also unable to get into the pipework as the pedestal is close to the wall. My thought process is that to replace the plastic waste pipe and bottle joint that I need to turn the water off, remove the flexible water pipes, cut the sealant somehow, lift the sink enough to slide the pedastal out a few inches to replace the pipework. Is this a sensible approach? If so, what can I use to cut through the adhesive, it seems to be a good 4 inches of coverage from side to side? Then do I need to fully remove all adhesive before fixing the sink back onto the wall? Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's most likely silicone that's been applied around the side and on the back of the basin. Few ways of doing this. Use a utility knife and cut the edge of silicone first, A) Use a strong fishing line, windscreen cutter and run it along the back of the basin to cut away at the silicone. B) Use a few chisels or flat scraper and slowly prise it away from the wall working around the basin and careful not to chip the basin. Normally this is the most common option but if the silicone is stubborn then you will need a thin wire to run along the back to cut the silicone. Just be careful sometimes pulling the sink from the wall can also pull the tiles away so cut as much silicone as possible. Oh and Good luck 🙈🤞

Hi Jamie First of all o would turn off the water so you don't have a even bigger problem. Cut out as much of the mastic with a stanley as you can then try a hack saw blade for the bits the stanley can't reach and take off gently so you don't rip off the tiles Keyon

Hi Jamie! The silicon(should bee that) easy can cut first with a sharp knife(stanley knife). After the most easy way to cut behind the sink with metal saw blade. When You did that can move the sink with extra care. My advice before You do this, close the main tap in the house and open the tap on the sink in the bathroom and kitchen. If need the pedestal can cut on the bottom and top(if need under the sink) With stanley knife. After that You able to move out from the wall. Hope my answer help. Yours sincerely Thomas.

Hi. You can use a longer knife to cut throu.for refit the basin it’s better to clean adhesive properly because it will be in even after cutting. For removing you can use silicon remover.
