Hi Can you please rank which is best to replace an existing felt roof (1 or first choice) and indicate which one is most expensive to do as well which one is quickest to install. Thanks a million. Nick

Fibreglass most expensive and in my option if done correctly is the best they build boats out of the stuff remember. The manufacturer will guarantee it for 20 years life expectancy of 50 years I’ve seen them fibreglass roofs older then myself I’m mid 20s now. EDPM is good as long as it’s one hole peace until you gotta do cuts round corners and try joining it together the glues normally fail even when done correctly a point to note the manufacturer won’t guarantee the glues that says it all. The manufacturer will Guarantee The rubber for 20 years and life expectancy of 50 years its a green product made from recycled material so good for the environment. Mineral felt is good and cheap but last long unless you get somebody who really knows there stuff and unfortunately it’s a Dying trade nobody really bleeds the joints out which you need to do to ensure it’s stuck properly this will come with a manufacturer guarantee between 10/20 years depending on brand I’ve known these to last between 10/35 years when done correctly and maintained. All good systems if done correctly all terrible but if are not done correctly EDPM should be the quickest to install followed by mineral felt GRP fibreglass is the slowest and most temperamental to weather conditions during installation I only advise this in the summer not winter. Hi I would put felt back on a roof every day of the week. Fibreglass is most expensive followed by rubber and then felt. We lay felt and rubber not fibreglass in my opinion it’s overrated we take fibreglass off roofs now for customers as it’s cracked or it’s came away from the deck and replace it with our three layer felt system which is a excellent job.

Tytek single ply roofing ltd

Single ply PVC is the most aesthetically pleasing roof the price depends on who you use it is a specialist trade so not all flat roofers are qualified to install it I stay clear of fibreglass as I’m constantly having to rip up relatively new jobs as fibreglass sets solid and structures move over time therefore it cracks and splits felt is great in older structures perfectly good on new ones but nothing looks as good as nice slate grey single ply roof 😁

Hi Nicki93, It's hard to say which out of EPDM and GRP is better. I believe that the more joins you have then you have more areas that could potentially fail over time. With this being said; a free standing garage would benefit massively using an EPDM Rubber system as it would be seamless and cheeper than a GRP roof. If it were a very complex roof with many corners, boxing, outlets etc. Then you could achieve a better system using GRP as it is seamless and when you start buying taping etc for the EPDM system you start building up the costs so would end up being better off paying for the typically more expensive GRP system. There is always a best product depending on the intricacies of any given roof. Felt is a cheap fix which in my opinion is becoming obsolete in regards of that there are better products granting much better guarantees and lifespans. Felt is ideal for a shed or an outhouse. Good luck, Paul
