Undersink water heater placement

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

Having renovated my bathroom in my all electric flat and had the old immersion cylinder removed as I have a shower and no bath, I now want hot water to supply the basin for hand washing needs only. I can’t have an instantaneous heater as the electrics arent up to it, nor can I have an unvented heater with tank as there’s no longer drainage for the prv. I know...I should have considered all this before re-doing the bathroom! So, I’m now looking at a vented Undersink unit, the hyco handyflow, with a separate tap for the basin which serves as a vent. But yet another problem..my only power source is in the old immersion cupboard, about 1.5 metres from the basin. Can this little unit with its 5 litre tank be installed there rather than under the sink? As I said, it’s only wanted for occasional hand washing. If this won’t work, do I have other options bearing in mind I can’t be installing wiring or plumbing at this stage? Personally I can put up with cold water hand washing but I shall be renting the flat out and tenants will likely expect warm (ish) water from the tap! I welcome your advice.

Hi there from your description, sounds like the storage hw type would be best. They heat the water slowly so will not draw too much current. If space is tight why not locate water heating unit in ex cylinder cupboard. You may need to add a PRV or an expansion vessel on incoming supply if it’s mains fed. This will be specific to each installation. All the best from Mark.

In theory it should be ok, but it’s always best to check with manufacturers instructions (mi’s) they make the products there best placed to advice on their capabilities.
