Moving extractor fan outlet above a planned shed/garage build

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

We are looking to build a lean-to shed next to our property. Unfortunately the kitchen extractor fan outlet isn’t the height of the roof (2.5m). Currently it goes straight through horizontally: kitchen plasterboard-> internal wall-> insulated cavity (foam pellets)-> outer wall. Maximum length of current ducting from the fan is about 1/2 feet. I need to move the outlet ideally 300mm higher so we are considering a couple of options: -Raise the outlet on external wall so that it is higher. Drill a hole on external wall. Bend the ducting up along the cavity and bend back out in a sort of ‘s’ shape. -Bend it horizontally left at 90 degrees and send it c.2 metres to the back of the house. Does either work and are there any building reg issues? Cheers James

If you need to move it only 300mm and there is enough space to do so in side the extractor covering then it's best to have it going straight through the wall rather then bends. Regards Tom

Best to have a short and bend-free route as possible but any of what you describe will not cause much of a reduction of flow for an average kitchen hood. Always best to use solid/slooth ducts/pipes where possible as these restrict the flow less. No obvious concerns for building regs I don't believe as long as it vents to outside.

Can you not extend the duct through the garage or outhouse If you put more bends in it it won’t work as well also to will be difficult to fit ducting inside the cavity wall area.
