Damage to bedroom wall due to hole in roof
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
I noticed a damp and moldy area in my bedroom. It seems that this was caused by a hole in my roof which has now been repaired. I cleaned the area in my bedroom with a mold and mildew spray. There are brown damp marks behind this. The white mold-like substance has come back again. Do I need to have the plaster redone in this area or should I treat the mold and then repaint the wall?

You want to use a mould killing spray, then A stain blocking paint if comes back again the roof leak hasn’t been solved.

Hi, there is no need to replaster unless the wall sounds hollow and has blown .if the wall is completly dry just a light sand to the area..the marks are just damp patches thst have dried.you can treat these with a oil base stain blocker,sealer.2 coats of stain blocker and then recoat the area on wall as needed with colour.if colour does not blend back with wall recote the whole wall .hope this helps

You should treat the mould again if it comes back then take plaster off and re _do with a moisture resistant board or a vapour barrier

What I would do is go up in the loft and see if the installation is been put back if so then go to a good builder merchant and see if they have anything to treat the damp replaster will not do anything it would come back

The white substance is hygroscopic salts left over from the damp evaporating, you will need to treat the salts with a salt neutraliser. Scrape the paint of first until you reach bare plaster before treating, you may need to treat several times to fully neutralise the salts. After this you should use a stain blocker for the water marks before repainting.

Look to see if there is insulation there, if no insulation this can cause mould, we're it is hot in side the house and cold out we’re the two meet this can cause condensation, we’re there is no insulation behind the plasterboard you will have mould start growing we’re it gets damp, you will know if there is a water leak if the stain looks more like a tea stain.
