Tiling onto painted plasterboard

My bathroom currently has 2 rows of tiles around the bath with matt painted plasterboard above that - this has been untouched since the house was built in 2015. I'm planning on tiling all the way to the ceiling (leaving the existing 2 rows and just tiling above this). Can i just clean the painted wall with sugar soap then put the adhesive straight on there? or would i be best off using something to prime the walls first?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, I would recommend cleaning and priming the wall before you tile. Best regards Carl

I would paint blue grit on the walls and leave 24 hours to set before tile just to add that extra key to the wall for the adhesive

In my past experience the best opinion is to have a wall paper steamer and scrap the paint off. If that doesnt work you can buy or primer and roller this onto the painted areas let it set then tile

Hi I would use a PVA glue. Put one coat on and let dry. Then apply second coat wait until tacky then tile.

From previous experience I would recommend using a wall paper steamer at first instance removing as much paint as possible and then apply neat SBR, once the SBR has dried enough it will be seen blue in colour which enables you to start tiling. I would definitely advise against tiling straight on to the paint as I have seen the consequences of this previously which is having the tiles fall off.

I would recommend trying to take off as much paint as possible and cutting some lines with the knife (helps to create a more porous layer where the adhesive sticks more effectively. ) prime the area Let dry then start tiling Regards

hi there it is an simple solution clean,scraping well the surface creating some cuts to have an good grip for the SBR an once is dry will provide and rough surface for the adhesive

If you tile directly onto painted plasterboard, the adhesive is only sticking to the paint and not the surface behind it. This is a big no no, especially for wall tiles as they are more prone to fall off (not ideal if you have little kids running around!) The size of the tile will have more of an affect due to the weight but even so for a proper job you would want to remove at least 90% of the paint and then apply a proper primer (not PVA glue) and then tile onto that. Hi! The answer to your question would be to use a steamer to remove as much of the existing paint as possible, prime the walls with Tilemaster Prime Grip (1kg ready mix tub), allow for drying time, then use a suitable wet area tile adhesive. And just to add that extra protection is to spray the area (once grouted and tiles are polished) with tile & grout sealer. Good Luck. Brian. Fairless

I would remove paint if possible then prime wall using a SBR primer which will give a better adhesion for the tile to the surface, which will probably fail if it want to be applied to just the painted surface without the correct prep. The reason it will fail is because as said above the tile adhesive will only stick to the paint and not the actual plasterboard/plaster behind the paint.

One thing I've learnt is to do the tape test. Get some duct tape and stick it to the painted wall. If you rip it off and loads of paint come off with it then it might not be best to tile over. Would be best to sand it down then use an sbr primer before starting to tile.

Preparation is key scrap loose paint if paint is flakey or loose then u will need to steam or sand it back to plaster as tiling onto it will cause u issues down the line once that has been done. Apply a sbr primer and then a liquid tanking kit before tiling

I would score the paintwork with a Stanley knife and then apply tile master prime + grip to the wall to give a good key for the adhesive to stick to and bond to.
