Can I permanently disconnect a bayonet flex gas cooker myself?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
Hi, I'm in the middle of renovating my kitchen and I want to remove the existing gas cooker but won't be getting a replacement for some time. Is it safe for me to remove it by unscrewing the bayonet flex and then to leave it like this for several weeks until I eventually finish the kitchen/get a replacement cooker? It won't be disturbed (there aren't any children around to play with the flex etc) or be moved around but I'm worried about gas slowly leaking out as I am rarely at the property so would not be there to detect a leak. Any advice welcome, thanks!

Legally you are allowed to disconnect a gas cooker flex from the bayonet. Nothing more then unclipping it.
If it's a screw fixing or anything that requires tools then no.
For peace of mind and a few quid I would get a plumber in if you never done anything like this before or get advice.

A bayonet is actually designed so you can remove the cooker for temporary cleaning behind the cooker, as long as you put it back. This is for cleaning, which takes less than an hour, not weeks as you want to leave it
If the cooker is to be permanently removed, then you can disconnect it, just as you would for cleaning, but who is to say the bayonet is not leaking gas when not attached to the hose? A gas safe tradesmen has the tools and equipment to make sure it it isn't.
A bayonet fitting DOES NOT need to be removed and capped. It is perfectly acceptable as it is. There is advise to remove and cap if it can be interfered with, and the bayonet should face down, but this is not mandatory.
In answer to your question: get a gas safe engineer in
