Gas Works

Hobs on gas cooker do not turn on

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.54 PM

Hi, We have recently moved into a house and have noticed that 2 of the hobs on the gas cooker do not switch on even though there is sparking and gas when the knob is turned. There is 5 hobs on total and the others appear to be working fine. Also the last time I used the cooker I thought that one of the hobs that was working now doesn’t work and the one that previously wasn’t working now worked. I couldn’t quite work out if this was really the case or I had just mixed up the working and non-working hobs. I would like to know what is causing this ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Book a visit and the gas safe engineer will investigate this. Thanks

It sounds like the jets could be blocked, you could try to remove the burner tops and see how dirty it is underneath. You can usually clear the jets with a small needle, turn the gas on to the jet to be cleared, and put the pin into the hole in the jet and give it a good wiggle. Then repeat on the other jets. Failing that it's going to be the gas tap.

It could simply be blocked or partially blocked jets. Do not attempt to clean the jets with a needle as you could accidentally increase the size of the hole and thereby increase the gas rate of the appliance.
