Semi detached house with North facing external timber stud wall approx 65mm thick needs rebuilding

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

My house has a north facing front elevation that has very little direct sunlight throughout the year. The structure of the wall is part cavity brick to underside of the upper floor then approx 65mm studded timber cladded wall to roof. The wall has a 3m wide by 0.6m deep bay from ground level to roof and so the cladding applies to 3 faces to the upper level. I am wanting to replace the existing insulation (if any) with Kingspan and the external cladding with a k render for a long lasting look and ease of maintenance. However, my concern is whether a k render will achieve this and have read elsewhere online that stains are difficult to remove and can be affected by algae and potential flaking. My question is, Are there regulations in place for the required build up of a 65mm thick external studded walls for domestic dwellings? If so where can they be found? Is the application of a k render recommended for North facing walls of this type? Where can I find modern alternative solutions to the external feature if not?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. you will find the information in the Approved Document L1 of the Building Control for small domestic works. 2. Unfortunately, in my opinion, whatever cladding used, due to the position, Algae will form if in the shade. 3. Regards to Maintainance, perhaps using a cement-based cladding may be the answer.

Firstly, I would contact the insulation supplier ie Kingspan. They offer a specification service which will tell you your ultimate build up of wall including insulation required to meet the current building regs. Secondly, There are many types of render on the market so I would recommend speaking to a render specialist who will advise on correct detailing and specification. If you let them know about your concerns about longevity they should provide a warranty. Hope this was helpful. Kind Regards Russ

Suggest if you are re-insulating the front of your home, contact a specialist render installer. They will be approved in using render systems such as krend. You can also address the north-facing and growth concerns. A high silicate content is supposed to resist algae growth. So best discuss cost/ benefit with the specialist. If the render area is easily accessible, then you can clean the wall to maintain a clean appearance. So you may go for a simple render solution and maintain with cleaning, like you clean windows periodically.
