Gas fire and flue

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi, our gas fire was condemned at annual check as it failed spillage test. We’ve been trying to get a simple answer to what we need to do next but getting very conflicting advice: A) our fire was incorrectly installed 4 years ago and we need to replace B) we need a flue lining (which was supposedly installed at the tine) put in as we are ground floor of four floored tenement C) we don’t need a lining as chimney flue is solid brick and no leaks D) we don’t need new fire. It just needs to be correctly fitted and sealed Help please. I no longer know whether to call yet another ‘expert’ and which one to believe!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would call your local building control for definitive advice. If the fire was sold as little as 4 years ago, there will be an approved manufacturers installation. I would say you need a liner, personally.

Sounds Like the flue needs to checked to see if there is a flue liner fitted.then I would redo a flue flow check again and go from there. Hope this helps.

If your fire failed a spillage test this will be as a result of lack of ventilation or a block chimney. My opinion is that a gas fire on a chimney needs to removed to allow inspection of the lower flue and catchment space and a smoke test carried out to establish if the flue is safe to use. If this passes and the spillage test fails then there is lack of ventilation for the amount of gas being burnt by the appliance this could be due to a vent becoming blocked or obscured by something or the appliance being out of adjustment.

Failed spillage test will be due to either a blocked flue / chimney, or poor ventilation, i would take the fire out and carry out a flue flow test, (smoke bomb) if this passes then you know the flue / chimney is not blocked up, so then re-install the fire and do another spillage test, if it fails the spillage test again then it will be most likely a ventilation issue, which will need to be calculated for the correct ventilation
