Temporarily make exposed light fitting wires safe

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi we have removed an old light fitting and realised the new one isn’t fit for purpose. How can we make the exposed wires safe (for a week or so) until we get a replacement light? We cannot reconnect the old light as it is broken Is taping the ends with electrical tape ok?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Put in waygo connectors..make sure lives are bunched together, neutrals together and switch line (should have a red/brown sleeve)on its own(if its not conected to another light). All good

Turn off the power to the lighting circuit to ensure safety. The exposed wires should then be placed in to some sort of connection box such as Wago or old style screw connector boxes These should be bunched together i.e lives together, neutrals together, earths together and finally switch-line kept separate. As an added precaution these should then be placed in a junction box as an extra layer of protection until a new lighting accessory can be fitted, preferably by a competent electrician.

Using a wago device which is a non maintained joint (no screws to tighten) is the easiest and safest way to cover up the exposed lighting cable. You can purchase them from any wholesalers or screwfix.
