Can I remove my gas fire chimney breast?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

I live in a 1970s 3 bed semi with 2 floors built in Kent. On the living room wall, which is the opposite wall from the joining property, I have a gas fire in a chimney breast but the chimney breast does not continue up the wall in the bedroom above and there is no chimney. My question is, if I wanted to remove the gas fire, could the chimney breast also be removed? Is it likely that ceiling joists are supported by this?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The fumes from the gas fire must be vented somewhere, even if the flue is not visible. You need to employ a Gas Safe Engineer to remove the fire and to look behind it to find the route of the flue. You should then employ a Structural Surveyor to advise you on the viability of removing the chimney breast. It would be unusual for the chimney breast to support the floor because of the potential fire hazard but it needs investigating to be certain. You will need Building Regulation Consent to remove the chimney breast as this is a structural alteration. If you advertise the job on mybuilder and get 3 or 4 good local tradesmen to come and give you a quote they should be able to deal with all this for you.

You must talk to a structural engineer before removing any chimney breast , and have them carry out calculations to recommend how best to support the brick work above.
