Render is a mixture of sand & cement. It is applied to the wall like plaster. There are different types of sand, you have very fine sand like kiln dried sand & silver sand. Then building sand which is a bit courser which is used for building walls then rendering sand which a bit more course, then you have grit sand which is used for concreting.

Render is a layer of sand and cement mix that is usually mixed with waterproofing solution and lime. The sand tends to be more course that traditional bricklaying sand. There is usually a rough scratch course applied underneath, to give grip, and then a layer of carefully finished render applied (final coat), which can be painted to the owners desired taste. Sometimes there may be a need to apply several layers over the scratch course before the final finished layer is applied. The final layer may be very plain, or have designs incorporated. The final finish may be pebble dashed (popular in 60s, 70, 80s) and it can also be dyed with a permanent colour in order to reduce the need for future painting. Render may also be referred to as "The Plastering".

Render is the covering of external walls, as plaster is the covering of internal walls. So render is part of the plaster family.

Render is a mix of sand and cement mixed with water and a water proofer additive. Which is then applied on to the masonry background to form a finished face which can then be painted.
