Hang heavy piece of glass on plasterboard

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Please could you help? I need to hang a glass piece of art (flat glass, no holes in it). It mounted fine on masonary walls, now need to hang in on plaster (dry wall). What are the best fixings to use? The glass has no drilled holes in it. The plastic clips provided have long thin screws and there is no way i can just screw them into plaster board rawl plugs - its too heavy. It's 2m x 1.2m (height). I cant use bolts with the current fixings as the holes are long and thin for normal screws. Many thanks, Sam

I would agree with SBS design and build however even with heavy duty plasterboard fixings I would be inclined to use them, depending on the exact weight I would be looking at having a section of plasterboard removed having wooden pads fitted between studs and having it plasterboard back over that way you have a guarantee secure fixing

Hi, a piece of Glass that measures 2m x 1.2m Will be of considerable weight.(no matter what the thickness) If you are able to position the clips where you like on the glass, I would suggest finding the the upright studs behind the plasterboard and fix directly to them. George

Advise to perhaps purchase a STUD FINDER from screwfix or a similar type shop this would trace where the timber studs are and you can screw directly into them for fixing. Would recommend this as you are fixing glass. If not then there are heavy duty plasterboard fixings available also however you will need to know the approximate weight of the glass to determine what fixings to use. These would need to be fitted correctly so would also depend on what youre DIY skill level is !!
