Boiler losing pressure after new fan fitted.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

I have an Ideal Classic HE12 combi boiler. It stopped working a week or so ago and after trying a couple of things, it ended up being the fan that needed replacing. Just had the fan replaced and all was working fine for a day or so. But then I started to notice a strange sound and when I checked the pressure was at zero. I re-pressurised and it sounded ok again, but within minutes the pressure was back at zero. I re-pressurised again and as I did I noticed the outside pipe was throwing out water from the boiler. I’ve bled all the radiators and can’t see a leak anywhere unless it’s well hidden. Any ideas what it could be?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Changing the fan is unrelated to the pressure From your description the prv blow off is continually letting water out, then the expansion vessel needs to be replaced or the actual prv is passing. 1. If able and if visible turn prv valve(the red knob) Should hear a clunking sound , that will be the water jamming on/off from the prv spring. If the water stops it's fixed if not you need to hire a gas engineer.

The fan is unrelated to the PRV just very unfortunate the expansion vessel needs recharging along with possible PRV. I would recommend a full service is carried out along with relevant system chemicals topped up

Regardless of how capable you are, please don't mess about with trying to fix your boiler yourself. You may end up with more problems than you started with and a hefty bill. In our working lives, we are all trained and qualified at something. Get someone in who is Gas Safe registered and knows what they are doing.
