Wind noise in twin wall flue system

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hello! We’ve recently had a lovely 5mw wood burner put into our place - we are extremely exposed to the North Coast of Devon and cop a lot of strong on-shore winds. Out Dura Flue twin wall system runs straight up through the bedroom with 1 45 degree and out through the roof. We’ve recently had an anti down- drought cowl fitted. When winds rise anything about 25 miles an hour, we get such high wind noises both in the bedroom and into the stove itself. The new cowl has helped but most definitely not fixed it. It can get so bad it actually prevents the fire from being able to go and can flatten or blow the flames out. Not only is it really disturbing in our social space but I can’t sleep in the bedroom when it’s windy it’s so bad. Our flue is 150mm and funnily enough, our neighbour in the exact same position has us has just had one installed with a 125mm flue and says he gets next to no noise. I can’t understand what’s happening but I’d love to find a solution! Any advice greatly appreciated!!

It might be that the top of the flue is not high enough. They are supposed to be 600mm above the ridge but you might need more if there are other structures around creating unusual air currents. There are also cowls available which act like a weather vane and turn away from the prevailing wind. This means the outlet is always downwind.

The only thing I can think off is to have a draught stabiliser fitted to the vitreous pipe comming off the top of your stove , you will have to go on the Hetas website to find our who can fit one of these for you or even get hold of the installers who installed your fire

5 inch flues can only be used on a defra appliance with a 5 inch outlet. So if you're fire has a 6 inch flue, you're stuck with the 6 inch flue, the extra inch diameter wouldn't make much of a difference with the down draught. As mentioned your flue should be 600mm above the ridge, or if its further down the roof should be at least 1m tall with the top of the flue being 2.3m away from any weatherable surface, if it's not then get the installer back to make the flue taller. If everything above is correct then look into a "flue cube". Regards, martyn - ecobuild
