Dry ridge tile abutment to chimney

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

I’ve had the ridge tiles replaced on my roof with a dry ridge system. The chimney is in the middle of the ridge. On one side where the last ridge tile meets the chimney there is a gap of approx 2 inches between the end of the ridge tile and the chimney. The gap has been filled with mortar. When questioned the builder said it was normal to fill in the gap at the abutment with mortar. Is this right?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Firstly why is there a 2inch gap from the ridge to the chimney? If the chimney has lead flashing fitted , I’d tend to seal with lead mate but that gap of 2 inches seems extreme. If the chimney has a mortar skew instead of lead I would point the gap with mortar.

The roofer should have adjusted the ridge tiles accordingly by removing two of the tiles cutting one down into a half tiled increase in the gap to fit flush with a three-quarter time finish this is the way it should’ve been done by sounding dry ridge system is a mortarless system

If the roof tiles are in line with the lead flashings at sides of chimney , then normally ridge tiles would run in with roof tiles , personally for me it looks nicer and more uniform so having mortar to finish would be perfectly fine

There Doesn’t need t be a 2 inch fall short it won’t leak if filled with mortar but I wouldn’t like the finished look

Well i dont think a 2inch gap will cause any problems as long as their is a lead saddle fitted on chimney but i would prefer to see a smaller gap than that. He has just done it like that to save cutting ridges.
