Can poor ventilation in loft cause leak in downstairs bay inside window?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM
Only in winter, and not even when raining, I have a small leak along one side of the top of my living room front bay window. It might have started when I had extra insulation input in my loft a few years ago and wondering if poor ventilation up there could cause this. There is a stain on one side of ceiling in bay and a few drips each day. What can I do to check this is the cause?

You could benefit from having some vent tiles fitted into the roof to allow any moisture a way to escape. If you go up in your loft and feel the inside of the roof felt, is it wet/damp?

As above said may benefit from roof tile vents being installed or maybe some vents to be installed in the sofit, what do you have above the bay on the outside? Some bays get alot of water sat on top of them when it rains could be possible you have a real small hole that is allowing the water in.

I agree with the answers above, if there is a problem with ventilation in the loft then the felt under the tiles will have water droplets on it. An easy way to sort this which you can do yourself is search ‘manthorpe lap vents’ on amazon they’re £22 for a pack of 10 and will slot straight in behind the felt to allow an airflow into the loft.
If that isn’t the case then the build up of water is coming from elsewhere and you should explore this further.
