Bathroom sink plug stuck
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.29 PM
I have a lug in the bathroom sink that you push to seal, then push again and it should pop up and release. Unfortunately the second push has resulted in it jamming - it won't release and I can't get it to pop up. I also can't get any traction on it to twist it around and take the top off. Do you have any advice for ways to release this or do I need to call in a plumber? Thanks

Hi. Put on a rubber glove. Push down with thumb and two fingers and twist anti clock wise. This will unscrew the plug which in turn raises it enough to pop out. Remove the rubber ring or replace with correct size... sorted. Bob.

Try spraying the plug with some WD-40 and keep pushing and prising or you will have to remove the U bend underneath to give it a push up from below.
Either way you need to renew the push up mechanism (if you can buy a new pop up waste that is similar to the one you have then you can unscrew the new pop up plug and screw it into your old waste fitting in the wash basin) or you will have to change the whole waste fitting also.
For now try removing the u bend underneath, push up the plug from below and then unscrew the plug pop up. See if you can find a pop up waste that is similar and renew it as it will happen again in the future until it is renewed, hope that helps !

From personal experience - we have the same problem with our bath plug. I have found the easiest way to remove it - is using a round suction plug about the same diameter as plug, taken off eg a toddler toy. I pushed a nail through the the plastic nub on top and tied strong plastic twine to each side ( thick Cotten thread thickness) . I keep it under bathroom sink and when bath plug sticks I push the suction plug down firmly onto bath plug and give it a good yank - it works brilliantly - I don’t have to bail out any water beforehand - this always works for me and then I wipe clean the bath plug seal before using again 😃

My advise is you will to call in a plumber as sometimes it may require to remove the drain plug and see if the return spring is still in position.
The removal off the drain plug will require sealing to avoid water leak under the basin.
