Can I hang a ceiling chair from any ceiling joist?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

I want to get a ceiling chair but I'm afraid because the joists in my ceiling are less than 6 inches that they won't be able to hold my weight. So I was just wondering if I could still get one.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I wouldn't recommend hanging the ceiling chair on the 6-inch joist. But if this is something you really like to have, you will need to re force the ceiling joist and make sure they hold the weight of you and chair. The best be to contact someone who knows how to do it.

You need to contact a structural engineer to survey the work before starting.

I would personally install 2 double trimmers (2 6" timbers butted up next to each other fixed with coach bolts) depending on the fixing arrangement 2 x 4"x6" timbers should suffice depending on the span of the timber. If your still in doubt contact a structural engineer.
