painting job or the house?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.52 PM
We moved into a 1930's semi about six months ago and had the whole thing professionally repainted. Most of the ceilings were replastered but not all the walls. I am now finding cracked paint and gaps all over. Down the side of doors windows etc and cracks in the ceiling. The house did have previous subsidence about ten years ago which has been remedied and we did have a survey from a reputable firm so am thinking this is in the way it's been painted rather than anything else but not sure how or why? any advice appreicated.

It is not due to the decorating , hair line crackes do appear in most houses due to tempreture changes (heating on heating off). If your cracks appear to be rather large it is most likely ground movement. If you used a repuable decorator i cannot see that it is his fault on the other hand if you used some fly by night it could be just poor prep.

Most likely the old plaster has had its day and needs to be hacked off back to bare brick and redoing. Same with the old lathe and plaster ceilings. Just skimming over the top and repainting them is literally "papering over the cracks"!
