Connecting a kiln with an industrial plug to power
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM
Hi! I just purchased a used kiln (link to model below) and am trying to figure out how to connect it to power. The person I bought the kiln from had a fuse box installed but I am wondering if I can also just connect it with a converter (household plug to industrial plug). Or if the cable of the kiln could be re-wired? Glad for any advice! I just want things to work and be safe. :) https://www.rohde-online.net/en/arts-and-crafts/products/toploaders/ecotop-series/ecotop-60?c=349

I've wired in 2 kilns in the past. One the same size and one larger.
Your one requires a 20amp supply. The plug you describe should be blue, and is called a commando plug. The flex coming from the kiln hopefully is heat resistant.
You really should get an electrician to sort this out for you for safety reasons.
It should be on it's own circuit with the correctly rated commando plug on the wall. These kilns produce an incredible amount of heat, obviously!! Therefore you should also consider having an extractor fan fitted in the same room. You should also clad the walls closest to the kiln with fire resistant boarding. These products you should be able to find on the web page advertising the kiln.
In any case you really should use a qualified electrician.
Hope this helps, regards John

Use a professional electrician who can use experience and calculate all the variables that are required for a safe installation, if you don't the question to answer would be if something were to go wrong would your insurance cover you!

You will need a dedicated supply of 4mm t+e or similar connected to a 32amp rotary isolator then you will be able to hard wire the kiln, regards terry
