Bricking up Victorian doorway-What mortar to use?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

Hi I am going to be bricking up an external doorway in a Victorian Terraced property. (Single storey section). Should I make sure the builder uses a lime mortar or would a cement based mortar be ok in this new section? I have read that repointing current walls should be done with lime based mortar for breathability. Thanks for any help

Lime mortar is the best as cement will dry completely the wrong colour and look terrible

He can use a lime bace mortar to block up the door way if the wall has no cavity in it so the wall will not sweat also if existing walls are based with lime it good to keep the same practice as the existing walls a good brick layer will know this

Definitely lime based mortar so that the stone is not eroded by the cement based alternative.
