Remove render and repoint
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM
I live in s terraced house and the rendering on the back of the house is knackered, ideally I want to remove the render and just repoint the brickwork, would the same person do both jobs? I also need to replace the gutter and fascias which job would j need to do first?

Yes. The same person can complete the job given they’re confident and have done such a task before.
I personally would remove the render and repoint the brickwork before staring on guttering and fascias

Do agree with the answers above - remove the render then install the facia and gutter. Also please be aware depending on the mortar strength it can have substantial impact on the face of brickwork. If the mix was been made too strong it can pull off parts of brick once removed or some bits stay attached to it. So it is always worth to do initial inspection. Once render removed the brick may need additional tidying or polishing for better appearance, and occasional bricks replaced. in most cases it wouldn't take much time to do so. All the best.

A good builder would be able to complete all of the above.
Ideally the removal work comes first, followed by the repointing and installation of the facia and gutters.

The likelihood is the you will chip the render off and the face of the bricks will come of with it. You will have to avoid treat the bricks first to get and excess cement stain off them. A bricklayer could do both chip the render off and repaint.

You will proberly find the face of the bricks will come off with the render my advice would be to either re render the property or remove the render and clad with brick slips. Then have the gutters and so fits replaced after

It depends on condition of brickwork underneath the render . Sometimes the face of the brickwork is too badly damaged to repoint. So in some cases the faces of the bricks are damaged by the render coat so it may be more than just a repointing job .

Totally agree with the above! The chances of pulling off the face of the brickwork below the render is very high. Was it rendered in the first place to cover the spalling bricks? Could be?
