How to remove a sink tap to replace washer

Hi ....firstly isolate water if there are isolater valves for hot and cold under sink ...then open tap to ensure water has left tap ....(if there are no isolater valves then you would need to turn water off from stop cock and drain water by opening taps) Once drained ... disconnect water feeds to tap ...with tap spanner or basin wrench ...have some blue roll on hand as there may be a bit of water seap out ...once disconnected check the fitting for tap whether it's a back nut or Monobloc Bolt Bracket....ensure you have the correct wrench / spanner to undo ...once undone this will free the tap...then once washer is replaced ...you will need to do each step backwards .. once water feeds are connected ...dry everything off under sink and when turning isolater /stop cock back on ...open a quarter turn at a time until fully open ...whilst inspecting pipework underneath ....I normally lay dry blue roll under pipework as this will show and drips or leaks if any connection isn't fully sealed ....then finally if stop cock is fully open don't forget to turn oppisite way a quarter turn to prevent it from ceasing for future maintenance 👍

If it is just an old fashion style turning tap you normally remove the handle by a small screw on the top behind a little plate with a H or C. Then remove the housing which screws in. Then you see the spindle. That comes off with an adjustable wrench. Unscrew and you will the washer. Goes without saying you will need to turn the water off by the stop cock valve beforehand.

Isolate the water feed to the tap.depending on tap style, unscrew tap barrel, renew washer and reinstall.

Firstly there is no need to remove tap to change the washer. Firstly isolate the supply. If it is a normal Pilar rap just unscrew the head and unscrew the top casing. You’ll then see the head gear. If it’s a rising spindle(rises when turned) just simply use a spanner to unscrew head gear and replace the washer. If it’s non rising you’ll have to remove the circlip first and do the same. You might have to use a reseating tool before replacing the washer. If it’s a mixer tap just undo the grub screw and repeat as above only this time it will be a cartridge inside you’ll need to replace. Hope this helps.
