Stairs made of cardboard?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

Hi! I wondered if some one had this dilemma. I have a newish-built house with 2 flights of stairs. The material dthe stairs is made if I can only describe as cardboard. I have question: 1-what is this material called? 2-Given that I really don't want laminate or carpet there, what other options are there? Paint? wood cover? a replacement steps? the replacement of whole stairs?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres. The treads (steps) and risers are the most common timber used on new build.Pine is also the most common timber used to manufacture stairs. You can Clad the stairs with kits quite a lot of places sell them.check out youtube put stair cladding in the uk. hope this helps.

Sounds to me like hard board, it comes dark brown usually, smooth one side. I gather this is just covering the steps maybe because of damage but you could try and see how it looks underneath. If it looks okay give it a good sand then woodstain or paint. If they are damaged and you would like to renew the steps you will need to find a professional carpenter for this I hope this helps.

MDF is commonly manufactured for stairs in newly built houses, I have fitted stair cladding before that leave a brilliant finish and you can get these in all different finishes.

Most new staircases are fitted with MDF treads and risers to save on cost versus pine. As mentioned above you can only clad the stairs or replace the lot. You mentioned that you didnt want carpet, however one option that you could do is paint the stairs and have a carpet runner. Which isnt quite the same as having a full carpet layed, just in case you havent considered that.
