Victorian house brick arch over door dropped
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM
Hi, I have an old Victorian house (built 1870’s) The back door has a brick arch lintel over it where one end has dropped 40mm and seems to only be supported by a bit of metal (like a screw in hook) underneath it. The weight is causing cracks in the mortar joints in the brick courses above. How would this be fixed without causing it all to collapse?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The courses that haven’t dropped need to be propped. All that has moved will need to be removed and cleaned then relayed in matching mortar. The Arch may be able to be lifted in situ and secured without removing completely and reinstalling.

Sounds like it's been altered at some point and needs rectifying/rebuilding back to how it was originally. A 'screw in hook' holding up one side of an arch wasn't how they used to build them... sounds very strange... whoever you get to sort it insist they use lime mortar and re use clean up the bricks of possible.

You need to install temporary works 500mm above the lintol 1st then you have to remove the lintol and set aside, remove the defective supports and renew once they have set reinstate the lintol and leave for about 5 days to set then remove the temporary works job completed .

We would recommend using a temporary timber arch former & props such as an acrow prop . Following this we would repair/ rebuild the side that has dropped . Prior to carrying out this repair we would also install a strong boy type prop to stop the brickwork above dropping during works.

I would support the archway with a prop then carefully take out part that has dropped and rebuild
