Summer house concrete base

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

I’m planning to build a timber-framed summer house of dimensions 5m x 2.5m. I am going to get a concrete slab laid for the base. From the research I’ve done, I’ve come to the conclusion this should be between 75mm-100mm thick, on top of compacted hardcore. I’ve also found that in some cases insulation board can be laid prior to the concrete being poured. Can someone please advise on the best practice, and whether or not insulation should be laid first? Also can you please advise on the depth required of the bed of compacted hardcore?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there to be honest I wouldnt bother with insulation in a shed base it's only required when building an extention and even then it doesn't do a great deal. it would be more use in the roof. As for the depth of hardcore I'd Probaly go with a decent 150mm of sub base compacted well with a whacker plate. Blind that off with some building sand then and lay a sheet of damp proof membrane (polythene) before you pour your concrete

Hi, i think best way to keep the floor warm is to first use compacted hardcore to mostly level the ground, then concrete for the base, then 100mm insulation on top of which you will have to put another 100mm of screed. Only on top of that you can fit your floorboards (tiles etc).

Hi once the area has been excavated, lay 100/150mm of crushed concrete put in shuttering to levels, lay minimum of 100mm of C25 concrete to the levels required.

Excavate the area to good solid ground and lay roughly 150mm of crushed stone and compact to level. Shutter area to your 5m x 2.5 making sure it's all square and level. Lay membrane and minimum 100mm of concrete use your shuttering to screed off for level.
