Boiler loud bang.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi. My Potterton boiler stopped working. The red light is on and when I try to switch on the system I can see the flames on but after 1 minute the boiler starts making a loud banging noise. This started after emptying the hot water cylinder trying to fix a leak. Any ideas why it is happening? Is it easily fixable? I got a qualified Engineer here twice. First time he could not do much because the door to the case was out of place and missing a screw. He charged anyway. Second visit he just banged the pipes and took some water out and "said the water is dirty, you need a hot chemical flush". Took more money and left. Disgraceful!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like you have a air lock in the boiler, this can happen after draining down the system. The boiler is overheating which is why you are getting the red light. Its due to the water not circulating round the system properly. It isnt always the easiest thing to sort unless you have some experience with bleeding systems, they can be quite stubborn.

There is possibly air in the pump. This does not then circulate the water causing the boiler to create steam (the banging noise). Getting air out of a system can be difficult but if you fill the system in the correct sequence it should not get air locked. The pump may have ceased up if it was left without water in it. If your in Sheffield area look us up.
