False chimney breast

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hello. I am wanting to build an extended false chimney breast for a large glass fronted balanced flue gas fire. A gas engineer will install the actual fire. Am I right in thinking that for the false chimney breast I need a team of tradesmen because of their various skills ie someone with knowledge of how to use specialised fireboards, how to do metal stud work and how to do it to the fire’s required clearances eg gas engineer? And someone who is precise with measurements for lots of different sized alcoves eg joiner? Or is it common practice for a joiner to do the whole job. Also I’ve been told by the fire’s manufacturer not to use gypsum boards due to them not being designed for continual high heat and to use instead fire boards such as promofour, Skamol or Vitcas, do joiners have experience with such materials? Your advice is very much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes you are going to need someone with experince and knowledge of fireboards around a fireplace. Any boards used can be provided with a fire rating which should tell you if they are ok to use depending on the temperature of the heat coming from your fire place. We have recently done a job like this.

I would have the gas engineer specify clearances and preferred materials and then a joiner can build the false chimney breast. A joiner could check regulations specifically for the unit and carry out the work if they wished.

A joiner can complete the building works of the chimney breast. For best practices and elements of criminal law the Joiner should be working in conjunction with the qualified gas fitter. They should both be following the manufacturers spec sheets that discribe chimney construction. There will be various fire lining boards that can protect the internal walls of the chimney. The joiner will need to pay close attention to the spec sheet to find out important information like for example, the number of centimetres between fixings, how many layers of fireboard would be required to withstand the heat
