Leaking fibreglass roof

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hello, I have a fibreglass flat roof that after 5 years has started leaking. the damp OSB is of about half a square meter area - does not seem like a pin whole problem. Climbed on the roof and I can see that there is a 5-8mm deep pool of water sitting on the same area. In addition, to my untrained eye it seems that there is very thin layer of top coat - the fibreglass below is very visible; I expected a smooth grey coat, but can feel the fibres quite a lot. Will it work to clean it well and then re-apply a good amount of standard fibreglass top coat? I've also seen quite a few Acrylic type of repair brush on solutions, but seeing that it is not a pinhole problem, not sure if this would help... Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello and hope this message gives you little bit more of an understanding!! Sounds to me like the job wasn't prepared in the first place. If it was me I would clean the area of the leak and then reply some more fibreglass resin the chance is might have relay it all again. Regards

In my experience when you have an actual leak these specialist coatings don't always work I would recommend drying out completely the problem area, clean down with asitone, then sanding off,the apply a 450gr matting and, resin, then a topcoat.

Answering inquiries on here there is at least once a week a between 1 and 3 yrs old fibreglass roof failing ‘ they are difficult to repair and even harder if water lays on it ‘ we board over the top to isolate it and lay a new polyester felt roof over the whole thing as trying to remove causes damage to the decking

Hello yes you will need to sand down the existing fibre glass with fine sand paper with an electric sander (recommend) then re-fiber glass with resin then a layer of grey top coat
