Underpriced Job and customer demanding money!

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

I’ve been paid in full for a job that massively run over budget. I didn’t ask the client for any extra money as it was my fault for underpricing, I have used my savings and run up credit card debt to try and finish the job. Because of this the job has massively run over. The customer is really unhappy (which I fully understand and have apologised for) they are now saying they do not want me back to complete works and I must pay them back £8000! So that another builder can complete. Where do I stand legally? Any advice is really appreciated as I’m at my wits end!! ****edit***** job has over ran as I had to go and do other work to get money in to finish this job. This was explained to the customer. Thanks for your answers, I’m going to speak to a solicitor tomorrow.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You need to seek legal advise from A charter barrister etc my friend, you shouldn’t pay for any extra materials needed your a human being entitled to make mistakes. extra labour you should accept as a loss or at lower rate then usual. Unfortunately clients think they hold all the power here in the U.K. A point to note it’s only this nation we’re customers expect free estimates & quotes, expect us to pay for extras, expect us to provide the earth for peanuts it’s gotta stop. I’m charging for quotes now and I make it clear I’m not taking on risks like not having enough materials, not accepting rubbish as mine etc etc The clients need to understand it’s their project not yours, you are there too do a job not to inherit risks & stress. There needs to be a independent body set up by government to police this industry from rogues builders & clients I’ve been trading under my own name for nearly two years and I’ve come across my fair share of idiots & rogues customers I’ve nearly been in court arguing with somebody on how to correctly felt a shed roof like come on it’s a shed... Hope you get this sorted fella

seek legal advice, but get together bills for materials, estimate cost for extra labour, put in writing why it overran, out of interest why did it overrun ?,have you done work that was not on your quote, or been asked to use more expensive materials than you quoted for, write yourself a summery of the job so you can better understand what happened, they have to offer you the chance to finish the job or have a good reason to not let you if they intend to go to law, unfortunately the media is always coming down on tradesmen but if they made programmes about indecisive, slow paying, customers who want more than they want to pay for, there would be no time for anything else on tv, as bt roofing says, get to a solicitor.
