Tiling

Tiling over a suspended wooden floor

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.27 PM

Hi, I'd like to tile my hallway floor (suspended timber structure) and was planning to screw down plywood over the top of the existing floorboards. Then pour a levelling compound on top, then tile. The existing floorboard is completely solid (no movement). Would this be an appropriate way of doing the job? Would the levelling compound be necessary? Any advice, tips or suggestions are welcomed!

Hi, yes, what you have suggested is a great idea. Make sure the ply is properly screwed down everywhere. I’d be tempted to glue it as well. Insuring there is absolutely no movement. As for the levelling compound.upu wouldn’t have to use it. However if you do, depending on what colour tiles you have. If they are light. I would paint all the ply with a stain block. As overtime the colour of the ply can bleed through slightly. But as for compounds, they are all pretty good. Sika do I very good one bit is quite expensive. Wickes have a selection of rapid set ones. Hope this helps

I would use a 6mm backer board many on the market , then latex with a flexible fibre based 2 part latex, then commence tiling with a S2 adhesive and then grout with a flexible grout

The ply is good for stabilising the floor boards then on top i would put cement board (tile giant) which is glued and screwed down giving you a nice firm and level base. For added protection seal the entire floor with aqua defence,it is a waterproof rubber coating. Then do your tiling. Hope that helps.

I would use the ply over the floor boards then use a ditra mat which you will find in any tile store I personally use tile giant it’s also easier to lay as you only need a Stanley knife to cut it then stick it down to the ply then apply a latex coat if needed

You can tile the floor strengthening is the key 20mm good quality ply glued and screwed 200mm centres install drita Matt But leave over night to set correctly but don’t latex it just fit direct to the matting it must not Be anymore than 10mm away from the matting for decoupling membrane to work correctly
