Unsightly steel beam with nuts in loft room
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.27 PM
I'd like advice on small issue with current loft conversion as in how to remedy or alternative measures to remove unsightly vertical steel on internal back wall of outer wall. I reckon it maybe part of a a support assembly for the loft conversion as it sits slightly offset from floor up to where the 2 slanting roofs apex meet. Strange as it seems like its made of just a convex and hollow steel plate not up to job and overkill if its just for the plasterboard, it's held in place by m12 nuts.

The beam should be covered with fire retardant board to get signed off with building regs? Once this has been done you won't see it.

Hi,
The beam needs to be made fire proof to meet current regulations,
this is achieved by a double skin of fire retardant plasterboard and a plaster skim coat, a couple of coats of paint and hey presto no beam.
Thanks Pete.

It’s just not the case of fireproofing the steel as it’s a case of finding out why it was installed as all steels are there for a purpose. I would strongly advise that you ask a structural engineer to find out what the steel holds up before you encase it as the Ds may require you to open up the encased steel so that he can see fit him self otherwise you will not get this signed off.
