Electrical

Rewires and TV aerial wires

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

We paid our electrician to do a rewire of the whole house. He ended up cutting our tv aerial wire. I wasn't expecting him to do this. He initially apologised. But when I asked him to fix it, he said no. I then asked him to pay for someone else to fix it. He said no. His argument is that this was just part of the rewire--that it's normal for every wire to be cut and that I should have specifically asked him not to cut the aerial wire. My argument is: 1. The document I signed that described the work he'd do made no mention at all of tv aerials and cutting them. How was I supposed to know he was going to do this? If I'd have known, I would have said no. 2. If he's saying that it's part of the rewire, then why didn't he also replace the wire like everything else he cut? 3. He knew that we were putting our TV right below the aerial wire he cut. Surely it's obvious that he shouldn't cut it? I shouldn't have to say it in the first place? 4. If it's just part of a normal rewire, why did he initially apologise after doing it? I would welcome a tradesman's perspective on this as I'm trying to figure out the way forward. Thanks! - Jack

Hi. He is having a laugh isn’t he? Sounds a really helpful bloke...not. It may not have been part of the rewire, but common sense should have prevailed here, by him. I have accidentally ‘cut’ stuff in the past but always fixed it, free of charge. You could always, if he has refused to fix it but admitted it claim on his Public Liability insurance. If he hasn’t got PL then get someone to fix it and send him the bill.

is the same as if he had cut your telephone wire or water pipe its got nothing to do with the wiring and his responsibility to make good his mistake , sure he charged enough to rewire the house.. get him back!

I don’t believe he should of cut this cable. However in the first events he should have run over your plans with every cable, socket, switch etc. It can be fixed of course you just need to get the right person in for that, hope you get this issue resolved.

If there is no mention of coax cable , tv points etc then he should of left it alone, if he/she accidentally do something then he/she should repair it regardless
