concrete crush underneath Type 1

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi, I'm having a gravel driveway installed. The spec was to dig out 200mm, lay 150mm type 1 and 50mm gravel. The chap installing the driveway showed me a few soft spots during the digging out, but before they had dug to the correct depth. They are now laying "concrete crush" (around 100mm - 150mm concrete bits) on to the geotextile membrane, and will then lay 50mm type 1. Is this correct? Is it stronger than the original spec? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

yes it is correct, to be honest we usually dig out to a total depth of 300mm this allows us to be at subsoil level thus creating a better base

If there Is good ground ie clay 150mm is perfect 300mm not sure why only time you dig deeper is if ground is bad .I would say it is all dependent on ground substrate .

Yes this is correct - concrete crush is similar to / or a type of MOT Type 1, basically a recycled concrete / stone, if compacted well it will provide a suitable base :-)

Any ‘soft spots’ need to be properly investigated and need digging out. If left in , any future compaction method ie roller or whacker plate, the water will make its way to the top and creat a spongey area which is useless on a drive.

MOT Type 1 can be made from crushed concrete. It can also be constructed from other material such as limestone or granite. So when you say topped with type 1 I would assume you mean granite. this would be a suitable base for a gravel drive as MOT's like crushed concrete limestone and carstone tend to set rock hard like concrete when compacted. This will be astronger spec regardless as the thickness of stone has been increased.
