Damp Proofing

radiator in front of a cold wall_condensation and mould issue

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM

While doing other renovation works I repositioned one radiator to under the window against cold wall. It is a rear of the building room and previously had some condensation/mould issue on the cold/solid walls. After two three weeks I could see that there were some black mould growing behind the radiator, probably because there is only few cm gap between a cold wall and a radiator?! So I had to ask a builder to take it down. The builder said that removing the mould with bleach and repaint it with anti mould paint should be enough but I want to make sure that it doesn't grow back again because I have some issue with my bronchus. Once the builder put the radiator back it will be tricky to go behind the radiator, so this is probably my one and only chance to do it right. I would very much appreciate if you can share your tips and experience with me. Thank you.

To be on the safe side . If possible I would put insulated plaster board on the cold wall . Re skim and paint then you will never have a problem again because the wall will no longer be cold

Hello, Use a latex-based antimold paint. it is incredibly effective. also, consider reintroducing some form of ventilation to that area.

Is not a good ideea to do that because the wall is always cold and in the winter time when the radiator is working behind and around that will be a wet wall also mold will come true

Hard say why this is happened however, there's nothing from none. 1st at all should you have any water ingress from outside?hair crack or similar, window ,gutter should be sealed well as sill.Is there any sandstone cill.as mentioned above.every case has reason. Hope it will be resolved. Regards

Hi I think your builders advice is sound but the other thing that will help would be to put an insulation layer on the wall behind the radiator to warm up the surface and stop the condensation starting regards David

Nip the evil in the bud, first off find the reason for damp or water rise, something within the or outside will show you the cause, however for internal bit we can suggest is to remove the plaster, tac a tanking or Damp proof sheets to the wall on rear and then tac PIR Thermal boards amd skim it. It never failed for us, this procedure is part of our full tanking systems in basements. I hope thats solve your problem. 2nd bit cheaper option is to apply thick bitumen coating on wall behind the plaster, then render with waterproofer, tac PIR thermalboards and skim. Hope it solves the issue.
