Strong earthy smell in both hallways.
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.46 PM
There has been a earthy smell in both my front and back of house hallway. They both have radiators and the back hallways has a fridge, washer, and boiler. Any ideas what it could be? We have cemented ground floors under our carpets and they don't seem hollow. Our house is about 25 years old.

Hi
Check to see if the floors are hollow . Some times water can penetrate under the house and smell (standing water)
Go out side and see if you have air vents at a low levels of the brickwork , if there is smell them to see if the smell is the same.
Hi
are there any vents in the hallway ?

Hi. The most obvious likelihood is the smell is being caused by dampness. If so, there are three possibilities, a/ rising damp, b/ water penetrating through the fabric of the building, and c/ the most common cause of damp in the UK, condensation. Therefore the first and cheapest step would be to get a free damp survey by a Aquatecnic or Wykamol recommended surveyor. Regards John

The cavity could be blocked and and no air getting through in to sub floor may need some 9×3 vents in to get some ventilation in

There is rot! However its finding it smelling vents and smelling the air isnt the way your going to find the problem. You need have somebody to come in and do a proper check as this my be that something is leaking within the property could be a fitting within a wall leaking or anything. smell cannot determine what the problem is..

The answer is feasible but for a house that is only 25 years old generally there wouldn't be any air vents due to the substrate being of solid construction.
i would be testing the subfloors with a hygrometer meter to see if the structural dpm has been compromised in anyway
