Green deposit around connections of external filter?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

I have an external magnetic filter fitted under combi boiler and have just noticed a green deposit on the copper pipe above and below it.I am assuming this is oxidisation & therefore maybe a leak . The boiler drops pressure very quickly when not in use from 2 down to 1b . I have had to top up pressure twice in last month when it dropped to 0.8 . Checked all radiators for leaks ok If it is filter connections should I just tighten up myself or could this cause more problems. Appreciate any advice Thanks Rootosh

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If no sign of leak inside the property then i would look at the pressure relief pipe (normally a 15mm copper pipe going to outside near boiler) see if there is any water dripping from it. If so heating engineer if not not then can try to tighten pipes. But me personally i would get a local heating engineer to look. If you over tighten you could make matters worse. Regards Tony

Yes definitely a leak. I wouldn’t just tighten it up, the joint needs attention / replacing.

you may have slight leaks on filter unions, unless you are competent at this sort of thing (you will have to use spanners to hold both side of union while tightening )i would get a plumber to do it,if this is not the cause of your pressure loss, check prv outlet (small copper pipe on outside wall)place a cup or container under it then check it for water after boiler has de pressurised,if its has water in it check your expansion vessel is charged,it may need to be re charged or replaced, but it is best you get a heating engineer/plumber to check it all.

For the boiler pressure to drop that quickly any leak from the filter would be visibly wet. Green oxidisation may be a weep or condensation formed as pipes heat rapidly. Cause of pressure drop may be a failing pressure relief valve or discharging pressure vessel. I suggest having a qualified person check the boiler.
