Toilet cistern filling when it shouldn't

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi, I have a problem where the toilet cistern fills and overflows when using water elsewhere: filling the bath, taking a shower, generally running water elsewhere will cause the toilet to fill and overflow. Otherwise the inlet valve and siphon are working correctly. I was about to replace the inlet valve, but think I may be wasting my time - it stops filling when it should, unless I run water. It is a close-coupled RAK toilet, about 6 years since installation. Any help or advice much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

sounds like you have high water pressure with some kind of fault in your cistern, over time the high water pressure has weakened the inlet and now when turning the water on somewhere around the house it causes a drop in water pressure in the cistern which allows the inlet to open and pass water through. Changing the inlet could solve the problem but would eventually return, fitting a pressure valve to you stop tap to reduce to pressure in the whole house and then changing the inlet would be the answer. However this is only my thoughts on the problem without looking into it properly.

I would replace the inlet valve, it sounds like its going and not good idea to leave it too long. You can buy a new one for under 10 pounds. Take care

This is usually caused by the change in pressure when you use another mains water faucet. Usually caused by a perished diaphragm in the float valve. I’d replace this first.

Most probably the fill valve requires a new washer or replacement and/or on certain flush valves the washer may also require replacement. I cant imagine that pressure would be the issue.
