Advice for insulation for flat roof (too hot in summer, too cold winter)

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.28 PM

I have a timber and felt flat roof (for the whole house) which was refelted 5 years ago when I bought the house. Unfortunately, I didnt appreciate that the insulation was probably years old. I think I'm probably losing more heat than I should. Also, in the summer, the top floor of the house becomes unbearably hot. Are they any solutions (e.g. extra cover than can reflect/trap heat) that can go on top), or does the whole thing have to be ripped off and insulation put in? Also, if there is access to the roof via an internal skylight/window, is scaffolding absolutely necessary? Many thanks Jim

Hi .first of all celotex is for warm roof only so it’s may need to be covered and waterproof... Loosing of heat (and overheat in summer ) means that insulation is not thick enough or has been not laid properly . You have two option. Relay new roof with new insulation or overlay it. If you overlay you can make warm roof (insulation under waterproofing) or cold roof just insulation on top and weight down with ballast or slabs. Second options is based on your roof weight calculation . If there is access from inside you can avoid using scaffolding and operatives can use harnesses or other fall arrest.. Hope this will help Kind regards Lukasz

If the felt is in good condition then yes it can be overlaid with a Celotex insulation and Alwitra Single Ply Membrane waterproofing. Need to be careful of condensation problems caused by the extra insulation. As for scaffolding any genuine contractor would and should insist on it.

Personally I would strip it back to the osb then use a bauder or axter layered felt system. You could go for a light colourered pvc system that sarnafill do also.
